Australia on track for mammoth score

A quickfire 48 off just 29 balls from opener Adam Gilchrist has Australia on track for a big score in tonight's Twenty20 international against England at the SCG.

Captain Ricky Ponting won the toss and elected to bat and Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden (20 off 8 balls) gave Australia a flying start.

Hayden departed with the score on 28 before Gilchrist and Ponting combined for a 69-run stand. After belting five sixes and two fours, the wicket-keeper was eventually out bowled off Monty Panesar.

After 10 overs, Australia were 2 for 117 with Ponting unbeaten on 35 and Mike Hussey not out 12.

Before the game, Australian quicks Brett Lee and Mitchell Johnson were both ruled out of the match.

Lee is suffering from a chest infection while Johnson has sustained a minor abdominal strain.

Australian team officials said Johnson's withdrawal was purely a precautionary measure.<637256>
