Victoria edge out WA in Twenty20 thriller
A sparkling David Hussey innings set Victoria up for a comfortable five-wicket victory over Western Australia in their Twenty20 match at the MCG today.
The win kept Victoria, which won the inaugural Twenty20 competition last summer, undefeated in this season's series and means it will host the final at the MCG on Saturday.
The Bushrangers were set the seemingly demanding target of 202 by the Warriors, whose 6-201 was highlighted by a big-hitting 76 by wicketkeeper Luke Ronchi at the top of the order.
And at one stage it looked like Victoria might struggle, when Brad Hodge (18) and skipper Cameron White (50) were dismissed in quick succession by veteran spinner Brad Hogg to have the Bushrangers at 3-97 at the halfway point.
But Hussey made light work of the chase, dominating a 99-run fourth-wicket stand with Michael Klinger in just 42 balls which carried Victoria to within 17 runs of victory with 29 balls left in the innings.
Hussey powered to 86 off just 37 balls, smashing seven sixes and five fours.
Medium-pace all-rounders Sean Ervine and Peter Worthington copped the brunt of Hussey's onslaught.
He took Worthington for 19 from the 14th over, including two sixes, then belted Ervine for 19 more from the following over, which took Victoria to 3-175 and within comfortable reach of victory.
The WA fielding effort briefly turned into a shambles under the Hussey attack in the following over, bowled by Warriors skipper Marcus North.
Hussey was nearly run out taking a sharp single to mid-on from the first ball, but instead four overthrows resulted.
A few balls later, Hussey skied the ball to long-on, but was dropped by Hogg, with the ball trickling over for another boundary.
He failed to add to his score, being caught by Hogg in the same position immediately after, but by then the match was effectively over, with Klinger (30no) guiding the Bushrangers home.
