Duminy leads Cobras to semi final

JP Duminy scored a spectacular 93 to lead the Nashua Cape Cobras to a 38-run win over the Nashua Titans in a Standard Bank Cup Pro 20 match at Sahara Park Newlands on Wednesday.

Duminy, opening the innings with Adam Bacher, put on a season-best 129 for the first wicket to lead the Cobras to a total of 212, which the Titans never came close to matching. They scored 174 for eight in their allotted 20 overs.

Victory moved the Cobras to an unassailable position in a race for the semi-finals although the Titans denied them a vital bonus point that would have ensured a home semi, by scoring in excess of 170.

It was the second highest total in the history of the competition while Duminyís effort was also the second best individual innings in Pro 20 history.

In a run chase that required in excess of 10 an over from the outset, the Titans were always off the pace.

Cobrasí left-arm seamer Charl Willoughby took two wickets in his opening spell and affected another superb run out, to put the skids under the visitors who slumped to 59 for four.

But it was the heroics of Duminy and Bacher that ultimately laid the foundation for victory. Duminy was the star with a wonderful display of clean ball striking. His knock laid the platform for only the fourth score above 200 runs in the competition.

Bacher, after a watchful start, blazed the ball to all parts Newlands on his way to 68. Duminy matched him stroke for stroke and then carried the innings forward after Bacherís dismissal.

Duminy beat Bacher to a half-century, reaching the milestone off 32 balls. Bacher followed in the next over with a massive six off Alphonso Thomas.

Bacher was eventually well caught on the square-leg boundary by Gulam Bodi off the leg-spin of Faf du Plessis. His runs came off 43 balls with seven fours and four sixes.

But Duminy continued to hold the innings together with an impressive array of strokeplay before being caught and bowled by Brendon Reddy in the final over. His runs were scored off only 57 balls with seven boundaries and four sixes.

Reddy produced the joint worst figures in the competitionsí history, conceding 56 runs in four overs.

Debutant Warren Swan claimed three for 16 in two overs taking the wickets of Farhaan Behardien and Reddy with his first and third balls at this level. Willoughby claimed two for 25 and Bacher two for 23 in three overs.

Martin van Jaarsveld top scored for the Titans with 76 not out from 42 balls with two fours and three sixes.
