Last-ball win for Services

The Twenty20 format might be all about slog-hitting and improvisation, but today the Jammu and Kashmir team proved that in the end its all about getting the basics right.

Five dropped catches, a missed stumping chance and some poor running between the wickets, and the five-wicket defeat to Services in the Twenty20 domestic tournament at the Palam ground on Tuesday was inevitable.

With the conditions favouring the batsmen, a run-feast seemed to be on the cards.

But it proved otherwise, as J&K could only manage to rake up 143 a reasonable total at the most. And then their strong pace attack, with names like Abid Nabi and Samiullah Baigh, could not stop the likes of Yashpal Singh and Tahir Khan from achieving the target.

Earlier, after choosing to bat, J&K looked well on their way to a huge score, getting 41 in just six overs, with Arshad Bhatt not afraid to use the arial route. But it was Hardeep Singh who got them to the total in the end, with an aggressive 51 in just 31 balls. With figures of 3/26, Yashpal Singh was the best bowler.

In reply, Services were hit early, losing two wickets on consecutive deliveries to Amiullah. It was left to Tahir Khan and Yashpal to save the innings, which they did by putting up 74 runs for the fourth wicket.

A few quick wickets did bring the visitors back, but a thrilling finish saw Services sneak through with Satish Upadhyaya taking the required single off the last ball.
