Dragons gain Twenty20 revenge

Glamorgan strolled into the Twenty20 Cup semi-finals with a five-wicket win over Warwickshire in Cardiff.

Warwickshire crashed out of the Twenty20 Cup with a five wicket defeat by Glamorgan at Sophia Gardens.

The Dragons booked a place in the finals on August 7 and were indebted to a crucial partnership of 118 from 13 overs between David Hemp and Matthew Elliott which formed the backbone of Glamorgan's reply to Warwickshire's 158 for seven.

The hosts had made a dreadful start, being reduced to two for two within eight balls after Matthew Maynard edged his second ball behind while Ian Thomas perished to the first delivery he faced.

But there then followed a concerted recovery from Elliott and Hemp.

Hemp, against his old county, pummelled a 38-ball half-century including five fours and two sixes.

At the other end Elliott, playing in his first Twenty20 match, played some inventive shots.

Both were out within an over of each other but it was left to Mark Wallace, Darren Thomas and Adrian Dale to take Glamorgan to victory with an over to spare.

The omens had not been good for Glamorgan going into the match - Warwickshire had beaten them on all six occasions the counties have met at the quarter-final or semi-final stages of cup competitions.

Glamorgan took the difficult decision to drop Michael Powell - called up to England's one-day squad just a month ago - to make room for overseas star Elliott, making his debut in the competition.

The Powell move was made easier that he has only scored 48 runs in the five group matches.

Warwickshire were without Trevor Penney (hamstring), Heath Streak (stomach injury), Jonathan Trott (leg) and Ashley Giles (England duty).

After winning the toss Warwickshire made a mixed start reaching 51 for three at the end of six overs.

After Neil Carter and Mark Wagh perished the key Glamorgan wicket came when skipper Nick Knight skied a catch to third man.

Brad Hogg and Dominic Ostler were forced to rebuild but in the face of some accurate bowling especially from Adrian Dale and Robert Croft.

And it was Croft and Dale who accounted for the next two wickets as Warwickshire slumped to 84 for five with the loss of Ostler and Jim Troughton.

The Warwickshire innings was given some much-needed impetus when 19 came off Dean Cosker's only over, which included two big sixes from Dougie Brown.

Hogg, who had anchored the innings after Knight perished, reached 50 from 48 balls in the penultimate over.
