No panic as Gough picks same 12

Yorkshire Phoenix have not been panicked into making any changes for their do-or-die Twenty20 Cup match against North Division leaders Nottinghamshire Outlaws at Trent Bridge this evening.

Skipper Darren Gough has decided to choose from the same 12 which lost by 30 runs to Lancashire Lightning at Old Trafford on Wednesday, leaving them joint-bottom of the table with Derbyshire Phantoms, the solitary point for both sides coming from no result' contests.

Whereas Yorkshire have still to win a Twenty20 match so far this season, Nottingham-shire have yet to lose one, having triumphed in three of their four matches with the other being abandoned.

advertisementThe only consolation for Yorkshire is that they have a game in hand on their opponents but they have already lost at Leicester and Old Trafford and now need a run of five consecutive victories from their remaining group matches if they are to have any hope of reaching the quarter-finals.

They must bat much better than in their two defeats if they are to put an end to their losing run.

They could only make 141 in the 16-overs match at Grace Road when they were chasing 155, and they were fired out for a disappointing 113 against Lancashire while chasing a very gettable 144 target.

None of their batsmen has managed to dominate the crease and nobody has managed a half-century in the two matches in which play has been possible.

The top-scorer is Jacques Rudolph, who hit an unbeaten 48 at Old Trafford, but he never really got on top of the Lancashire attack and kept losing partners to some poor shots.

Yorkshire's bowling was up to standard against Lancashire and left-arm spinner David Wainwright was outstanding on his Twenty20 debut. He failed to pick up a wicket but gave away only 22 runs from his four overs.

Wainwright got his chance because Yorkshire left out fast bowler Deon Kruis, and with none of the bowlers doing much wrong the South African Kolpak player may find himself omitted again.

After this evening's game, Yorkshire will be half-way through their eight-match programme but they have only been at home once - and that was in the Headingley Carnegie Roses washout on Monday.

They are eager to give a good account of themselves at Headingley tomorrow when they take on Durham Dynamos (5.30pm) but more bad weather is forecast for the weekend.
