Foxes hopes in the balance

Head coach Tim Boon said he had "never seen anything like" the weather which led to Leicestershire's third consecutive home wash-out in the Twenty20 Cup last night.

Heavy showers caused the abandonment of the clash against Durham after a two-hour delay, with Leicestershire 41-3 from 4.4 overs off a revised limit of seven overs.

The champions' participation in the tournament is now in the balance for they are in third place behind Notts, who have qualified for the quarter-finals, and Lancashire, their opponents at Old Trafford tomorrow in their final group match.

That game, however, is in doubt, so County may be forced to rely on other results going their way in the other two divisions in order to qualify as a best third-placed finisher.

Lancashire are understood to have asked the ECB to allow the umpires to inspect the pitch at 9am tomorrow. Club officials said the ground was under water yesterday afternoon.

Boon said everyone at the club could not be more frustrated. "It has just been another incredible day," he said. "We have only played one full Twenty20 game in seven attempts and we have spent more timing warming-up than actually playing.

"The sun made us come off for an hour at Derby but at least we played a proper game.

"This is our second Seven7 debacle when the whole community has come in to support us and the gods haven't looked upon us favourably. It absolutely poured down.

"I have never ever known the amount of rain, the days lost and the frustration that we have encountered this season.

"We have already had word from Old Trafford that the ground is like a lake. We have just got to sit tight, go up to Manchester and hope that we get a win."

The Foxes will be keeping an eye on other results, and Boon said he shared the frustration of the supporters who had only seen 32 overs in the four fixtures at Grace Road.

"It's really disappointing for the club, and the players are disappointed for the spectators. What we see in Twenty20 cricket is a wide variety of people and the atmosphere has been terrific. We want to thank the supporters who have been around. They have been excellent."
