White blitz denies Steelbacks

Cameron White's 50 from 42 balls saw Somerset end Northamptonshire's dreams of Twenty20 Cup silverware for another year, with an eight-wicket victory tonight.

David Sales clubbed 61 from 48 deliveries for the hosts at Wantage Road - but it was not enough as Somerset cantered to a comfortable win with 16 balls to spare.

Having won the toss, Northants opener Lance Klusener showed his intentions - driving Steffan Jones through midwicket for four from the second ball of the innings.

Usman Afzaal fell in the fifth over when he missed Gareth Andrew's full delivery which removed the off stump.

Peter Trego then saw off Klusener, missing a drive to be clean-bowled.

Andrew dropped a return chance from Sales on nought, but White ran out his namesake Rob.

With the home side in trouble at 66 for five, Sales and Johan van der Wath both hit massive sixes out of the ground in consecutive overs.

But with two overs left, the South African was on his way back, White bowling him middle stump.

Sales reached his 50 in the 19th over, pulling Jones for four in a 20-over total of 137.

The Sabres reply got off to a bad start when Justin Langer drove the ball straight back at Steve Crook, who held on to dismiss him for four.

But White joined opener Matthew Wood at the crease and began an assault on the Northants bowling, in a second-wicket partnership of 63.

The partnership was finally broken in the 12th over when Wood drove a Klusener delivery into the hands of Sales at mid-on, having made 41 from 38 balls.

White was joined by John Francis for a 65-run partnership, during which the Australian drove David Lucas into the members' stand for six.

White also hit another huge six over long-on to secure the result - while Francis finished with 35 from 24 balls.
