Trescothick returns to banish past demons

The ECB have annouced their 30-man preliminary squad for this years Twenty20 World Cup in South Africa and it sees Marcus Trescothick recalled as both parties take the first tentative steps to deciding whether he has a future in international cricket.

The squad contains two players who are uncapped at international level: Essex batsman Mark Pettini and Sussex all-rounder Luke Wright. The Surrey leg-spinner Chris Schofield, who won two Test caps in 2000, has also been included.

Commenting on the squad, Chairman of Selectors David Graveney, said: “We have chosen this squad specifically for the ICC World Twenty20 and included a number of players who have an excellent record in this form of the game at domestic level.

“Several players who were in our World Cup squad and featured in the recent Test series against West Indies have not been included but 50-over cricket is a different format and they will remain in our thoughts when we select the squad for the The NatWest Series against India and the forthcoming tour of Sri Lanka.

“Marcus Trescothick is a contracted player and was named in the England Performance squad earlier this summer. We have decided to name him in this provisional squad in order to give us more flexibility should it be decided that Marcus is ready to return to international cricket before the tournament takes place.

“We are pleased that Marcus has made a successful return to County cricket this summer and he remains a world-class opening batsman but we will not be placing undue pressure on him to make a return to international cricket without first carefully considering all the issues involved. Ultimately, we will be guided by Marcus and the ECB medical staff as to his availability and I would anticipate that further discussions will take place with him before the squad is narrowed down to 15 in mid August.”
