Lawson had no input into squad selection

Newly appointed Pakistani cricket coach Geoff Lawson was not consulted for the Twenty20 World Cup team selection because the selection committee did not see the need for this.

The 15-man Pakistani squad for the inaugural World Cup of the shortest version of the game was announced on Tuesday.

"Lawson is yet to start his stint (as national coach) and doesn't know these boys well which is why there was no need to consult him," said Sallu, a former Test cricketer.

But he expressed confidence about Lawson being happy to work with the squad selected by the committee, saying "I'm sure Lawson will agree with us because this is the best possible team."

Sallu, however, said the selectors took due inputs from Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik.

"We talked to Shoaib Malik in detail over the final combination, but in the end it was our call," The News quoted Sallu, as saying.

"We took Shoaib's input, and I must say that he completely supported our decisions," he added.

Lawson is scheduled to begin his two-year assignment with the national team from August 22 when the players will be attending a week-long conditioning camp at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.
