Elworthy takes key Twenty20 role

The England and Wales Cricket Board has appointed Steve Elworthy as tournament director for the 2009 World Twenty20.

The South African filled the same role for the inaugural ICC event in his native country earlier this year.

Elworthy, who will take up his new post in January, has experience of English cricket from spells with Notts and Lancashire during his playing career.

"He is the ideal candidate to lead the event in England and Wales in 2009," said ECB chief executive David Collier.

The dates for the World Twenty20 have yet to be confirmed, but the tournament is expected to be the focal point of the first half of the summer before centre stage is taken by the Ashes series between England and Australia.

"The opportunity to join ECB and run the 2009 event during an amazing summer of cricket in England and Wales with the ICC World Twenty20 Tournament, ICC Centenary and the Ashes is an honour and a challenge which I am relishing," said Elworthy.

India are the reigning World Twenty20 champions, having beaten Pakistan by five runs in an exciting final in Johannesburg two months ago.

"The 2007 event was a festival of world class cricket which captured the imagination of the world - my goal is to ensure that the 2009 event is even more successful," Elworthy added.
