IPL slammed for Test debacle

The Indian media has turned on the upcoming IPL saying it is to blame for the national team's humiliating defeat to South Africa.

The Indians lost the second Test by an innings and 90 runs - the worst home Test loss since 1959 - after the sides enjoyed a high-scoring draw in the first encounter of the series.

The lucrative Twenty20 league begins in two weeks time, just three days after the conclusion of the third Test, with a number of high-profile Indian stars set to join forces with stars from around the world in a money-spinning tournament on the sub-continent.

A number of ex-players and cricket writers have blamed the tournament for taking the players' focus away from the job in hand, and former Test wicket-keeper Kiran More pulled no punches in his assessment of the situation.

"How many turned up for the net practice session before the match tells the story," he said. "The players were already too tired by attending various IPL functions."

An article in the Hindustan Times claimed: "The Indian cricket board does not seem to care that the players have to focus on the Test series now, not on the IPL.

"After the drawn first Test in Chennai, which was played in energy-sapping conditions, the players needed rest so that their minds remained focused.

"Instead, we found that players spent the short rest period before the second Test advertising for their IPL teams.

"In contrast, the South Africans - who are going to play in the IPL circus as well - said no to these shoots. For them, winning the Test series was clearly more important."
