Dolphins earn easy victory over Lions

Johann Louw's bowling and Grant Rowley's batting earned the Nashua Dolphins a five-wicket win over the bizhub Highveld Lions in a Standard Bank Pro20 match in Johannesburg on Friday.

Louw took four for 28 as the Lions crashed to a total of 104 for nine after being put in to bat.

Rowley top-scored with 46 in the Dolphins' reply of 105 for five, which they reached in 17.1 overs.

The Lions were in trouble immediately when Jean Symes edged the first ball of the match - bowled by Yusuf Abdullah - to wicketkeeper Daryn Smit.

Five overs later the home side had crashed to 27 for five after Louw ripped out the wickets of Alviro Petersen (two), Dumisa Makalima (nought), Blake Snijman (18) and Justin Ontong (four).

Louw took his wickets in the space of eight of his deliveries, and when Ontong went he had figures of four for 12 from 2.2 overs.

Petersen started the slide when he skied a delivery to mid-off, and three balls later Makalima was flummoxed and duly bowled by a straight delivery.

In his next over, Louw induced a skied drive to cover by Snijman and had Ontong caught behind.

Vaughn van Jaarsveld (11) and Heinrich le Roux (15) mounted a modicum of a recovery with their stand of 27, but they were run out eight balls apart to leave the Lions reeling on 55 for seven.

It was left to the last pair, Friedel de Wet (13 not out) and Garnett Kruger (19 not out), to drag the home side to three figures after they came together at the crease in the 15th over with the score on 67 for nine.

Numbers 10 and 11 showed the supposedly better batsmen above them in the order how it should be done with a superbly scrambled unbroken stand of 37 runs, most of them unpretty.

Kruger was soon back in the thick of it with the ball when he had Doug Watson (one) caught behind in the third over of the Dolphins' reply.

Rowley and Imraan Khan (28) steadied the visitors with their second-wicket stand of 57.

The Dolphins made heavy weather of the final stages of what should have been a doddle of a runchase when they threw away three wickets for two runs in six balls.

That put paid to them claiming a bonus point, but the win was in the bag.
