Brit Oval IPL plans shelved
Hopes of staging an IPL match at the Oval this summer have faded due to existing broadcasting deals which cannot be changed.
It was hoped that a couple of hastily-arranged matches between Shane Warne's Rajasthan Royals and the Kolkata Knight Riders might take place on July 15 and 16 but the ECB have a contract with Sky to show Pro 40 matches from Worcester and Chelmsford on those days.
Contractual agreements means that the matches cannot be dropped at this late stage and so the prospect of the IPL circus moving to England has been put on hold for a few more months.
Paul Sheldon, the Surrey chief executive, explained to The Times that it was impossible to play the games at the historic venue, despite the wishes of the county.
"We have an arrangement with the ECB to run charity matches and part of our mission is to fill up the Oval," he said. "We have tried very hard to put the match on and are disappointed that there is no prospect of broadcasting rights, but we quite understand the contractual situation between the ECB and Sky."
