Bears pile on the misery for Sabres

Chris Woakes claimed four for 21 to lead Warwickshire to a five-wicket win over Somerset in the Twenty20 Cup at Taunton.

The Sabres moved to 78 without loss after winning the toss as Marcus Trescothick hit 48 and Justin Langer 39.

But the rest of the innings crumbled as Woakes took three wickets in an over and a total of 131 all out was never going to be enough.

Warwickshire paced their run chase well to win off the fifth ball of the final over, reaching 135 for five, with skipper Ian Westwood 35 not out. Alfonso Thomas was the pick of the Somerset bowlers with one for 12 from his four overs.

Somerset's innings followed the pattern of their previous two defeats in the competition, falling away disastrously after a good opening partnership.

Trescothick was dropped on 13 by Neil Carter at mid-on and went on to top-score, with two sixes and four fours, while Langer hit a six and five fours in his 30-ball knock.

From 78 without loss after 11 overs wickets fell steadily as Warwickshire's bowlers reaped reward for keeping the ball right up to the bat.

Woakes was especially effective in this respect and the 18th over saw him remove Peter Trego, Craig Kieswetter and Wes Durston.

Ant Botha had claimed the key wicket of Langer and that of the out-of-form James Hildreth for figures of two for 16, while Chris Martin did for Trescothick with a perfect Yorker and finished with two for 23.

Carter got the Warwickshire reply off to a good start with 31 off 20 balls and, although Mark Turner (two for 33) grabbed a couple of early wickets, Somerset were unable to exert any real pressure.

Jim Troughton hit four fours in his 33 off 31 deliveries and the Bears always kept the required run-rate at around seven an over.

Westwood came in at 57 for three and played just the innings his side required, with two fours and a six in his 29-ball stay.

Seven were needed off the final over, bowled by Ian Blackwell, and a boundary from Botha eliminated any doubt about the result.
