The Northants Steelbacks hit a Twenty20 Cup record at Campbell Park in Milton Keynes against the Gloucestershire Gladiators.

Steelbacks captain David Sales was to the fore, smashing 78 from 42 balls with seven fours and four sixes.

Gladiators seamers Carl Greenidge and Steve Kirby saw their eight combined overs fly for 96 runs.

The bulk of the runs came in an unbroken 82-run sixth-wicket stand between Sales and Damien Wright, whose 38 occupied 20 deliveries.

The Northants total was three more than the previous best, which was first achieved by Gloucestershire in 2003.
