Mendis restricts Rajasthan Royals to 150
Recovering from a poor start the Rajasthan Royals set a target of 151 for the Kolkata Knight Riders to chase for victory.
Brendon McCullum’s decision to bowl first proved to be a master stroke early on as young Anureet Singh gave Kolkata a chance for early celebrations.
A late order contribution from Jadeja (22), Mascarenhas (27) and AS Raut (21) saw Rajasthan set a modest a total for KKR to chase.
It indeed was not the ideal of the starts which defending champions would have hoped. Put into bat, Rajasthan Royals lost two early wickets in form of PC Valthaty (5) and RJ Quiney (6).
Anureet Singh brought the first breakthrough for Knight Riders while Ishant Sharma induced a catch from Quiney to reduce Royals to 14/2 at one stage.
Kolkata’s ‘mystery man’ Ajantha Mendis got rid off Graeme Smith and Yusuf Pathan in his debut over at Indian Premier League to put Royals in deep trouble .
Yusuf Pathan (42) and Graeme Smith (15) looked to give some momentum to Rajasthan innings after double blows early on. Kolkata however were quick to respond to Pathan’s onslaught as they brought Ajantha Mendis in attack. Mendis straightway provided the breakthrough as Smith managed to hit the ball onto his pads and in slips to Chris Gayle.
On-field umpire Mark Benson had to check it from third umpire before ruling Smith out.
Kolkata Knight Riders captain Brendon McCullum won the toss and elected to bowl first against current champion Rajasthan Royals in a crucial IPL encounter here at Newlands, Cape Town.
McCullum’s decision was anybodies guess after rain delayed the proceedings in Newlands much to the disappointment of 25000 capacity crowd.
The match will be of 20-overs despite the delayed start.
