Super Kings destroy Chargers in romp

Shadab Bashir Jakati took 4 wickets as the Chennai Super Kings beat the Deccan Chargers by 78 runs to win a one sided game at Buffalo Park in East London.

Jakati returned with figures of 4/22 as Chennai went on top of the points table by bowling out Deccan for 100 runs in 14.4 overs. Chennai captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni was adjudged the Man of the Match for his unbeaten half-century.

Deccan got off to the worst start possible with captain Adam Gilchrist falling leg before wicket for a golden duck. Albie Morkel came from round the wicket, fired in a yorker that swung in late and hit Gilchrist on the back toe.

In the next over, Herschelle Gibbs came down the pitch but deflected the Sudeep Tyagi delivery off his pads onto his stumps.

In the next over, Laxman flicked a Morkel delivery to short mid-wicket for Shadab Bashir Jakati to take the catch as Deccan lost their top three batsmen for ducks.

It was then that the counter attack happened as Smith and Rohit Sharma put up 72 runs in 6 overs. Smith led the counter attack smashing 5 sixes and 2 fours in his 49-run knock that came off 23 deliveries.

Rohit hit a six and 2 fours in his 20-ball 21.

But Jakati removed both Smith and Rohit in one over before they took the match away from Chennai.

Jakati first had Rohit caught by Subramaniam Badrinath at deep mid-wicket and four deliveries later, dismissed Smith by trapping him plumb in front of the wicket.

Apart from Smith, Rohit and Tirumalsetti Suman (17), none of the other Deccan batsmen registered double figures.

Earlier, captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni hit an unbeaten half-century to take Chennai Super Kings to 178/3 in 20 overs.

Dhoni reached his third IPL fifty off 35 balls and remained not out after a 58-run knock that came off 37 balls and was studded with a six and 6 fours.

Winning the toss and batting first, Chennai lost Matthew Hayden after he smashed 3 sixes and 5 fours in his 43-run knock that came off 26 balls. Two of those 3 sixes were mis-hits but even then the ball sailed over the boundary.

Shoaib Ahmed gave Deccan the first breakthrough when he had Hayden caught at short third man by RP Singh.

It was largely due to Hayden's hitting that he and Vijay registered the first 50-run partnershp in T20 cricket at Buffalo Park and came off 36 deliveries.

Opener Murali Vijay hit a six and 2 fours in his 33-ball 31 before Tirumalsetti Suman had him caught at long-off by Herschelle Gibbs.

Suresh Raina hit 2 sixes and a four in his 32-run knock that came off 19 balls before he was caught by Dwayne Smith at long-on off his Uttar Pradesh and India teammate RP Singh.
