Lightning make it 5 wins in a row

Lancashire were indebted to openers Paul Horton and Tom Smith for making it five Twenty20 Cup victories on the bounce at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.

The Lightning, who may only need one more win to qualify for the last eight, amassed a daunting 165-7 against the Derbyshire Phantoms — their highest score of the competition so far – including 74 off the first six overs.

Horton hit 41 off 20 balls, including seven fours and a six, while Smith cracked three fours and a maximum in his 21-ball 32. Their scores were career bests, while Ashwell Prince also hit an unbeaten 38.

Sajid Mahmood then claimed career-best bowling figures of 4-29 from four overs to restrict Derbyshire to 127-9 and seal a 38-run for in-form Lancashire.

Smith and Horton hit 75 for the first wicket off 40 balls before medium pacer Garry Park (3-23) and leg-spinner Mark Lawson (2-20) helped restrict Lancs to just 89 runs off the last 14 overs.

Steven Croft (25) and Prince shared 51 for the fourth wicket to help add some late impetus.

Derbyshire’s reply started poorly with Smith, Glen Chapple, Mahmood and Francois du Plessis all picking up wickets to reduce the score to 56-4.

Former Red Rose captain Stuart Law was later bowled by left-arm spinner Stephen Parry for seven before Mahmood picked up his last three wickets at the death to cap a resounding win.
