Redbacks slip up at the Olympic Stadium
The West End Redbacks suffered a torrid time at the Olympic Stadium in Sydney against the SpeedBlitz Blues after being bowled out for just 80 inside 15 overs.
Graham Manou won the toss for the Redbacks and elected to bat first but he was soon forced to regret that decision as the Blues struck to remove Daniel Harris and Manou inside the first 2 overs.
Harris had got off to a good start scoring 11 runs from just 6 balls before he mistimed a pull straight into the hands of David Warner at midwicket off the bowling off Grant Lambert.
It was to get worst for the Redbacks an over later when Manou (8) was caught out on the boundary by Warner to leave the visitors 21-2. Lambert struck again in the third over to remove Tom Cooper (11) before the big wicket of Shahid Afridi was claimed to give Lambert his third wicket of the night.
For the first time this year the Redbacks found themselves in a difficult position but things got a lot worse after Mark Cosgrove (7) was run out to leave them 50-5.
Despite losing so many wickets the Redbacks would have been confident of achieving a score high enough to be able to defend with Kieron Pollard and Daniel Christian at the crease.
It was hard going for Pollard and it took him 14 balls before he found the boundary hitting a huge six over long on, he tried to repeat the shot off the next delivery but he could only watch as the ball sailed into the hands of Philip Hughes out on the boundary.
The Redbacks were now in deep trouble and they never managed to recover losing their last 4 wickets for just 23 runs to set the Blues an easy target of just 81 for victory.
It was the Redbacks lowest ever total on the KFC Big Bash and with their place ion next weekends final already assured they have to hope their poor batting performance was just a one off.
