Gibbs and Symonds prosper with the bat

Herschelle Gibbs (45) and Andrew Symonds (50) enjoyed a 3rd wicket partnership of 95 to help the Deccan Chargers reach 190-4 against the Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Having won the toss and elected to bat the Chargers got off to a flying start on a flat wicket with Adam Gilchrist rolling back the years with a scintillating performance with the bat.

Supported by Laxman (12), Gilchrist attacked the Super Kings bowlers to score a sensational 38 runs from just 17 balls to get the Chargers off to the perfect start becoming the first man to score 1000 runs in the IPL.

The former Australian wicketkeeper smashed 4 fours and 3 sixes including two in a row off the bowling of Sudeep Tyaqi to fire the Chargers past 50 inside the first 5 overs.

The opening partnership had rapidly reached 55 before the Super Kings finally made a breakthrough with spinner Ravichandran Ashwin bowling Gilchrist (38) to halt his onslaught.

Having made a breakthrough the home side struck again with the very next ball to remove Laxman who was run out by MS Dhoni after some brilliant fielding by Suresh Rainia at square leg to leave the Chargers 55-2.

The lose of two quick wickets left Gibbs and Symonds the task of rebuilding the Chargers innings after such a great start.

With two new batsmen at the crease Super Kings skipper MS Dhoni started to rotate his bowlers in a bid to slow the Chargers down. The plan initially worked to perfection with Symonds in particular struggerling to make any progress scoring only 2 runs from the first 13 balls he faced.

After a slow start Gibbs and Symonds started to break the stranglehold of the Super Kings bowlers with the pair aggressively dispatching 4 huge sixes into the stands as they started to build a substantial partnership.

The big hitters were both run out in the space of two overs but their contribution had helped the Chargers set the Super Kings a target of 191 for victory.
