Pathan innings in vain as Kings XI suffer defeat

Andrew Symonds scored an impressive half century to help the Deccan Chargers make it two wins on the trot with an easy victory over the winless Kings XI Punjab.

Having won the toss Kings XI skipper Kumar Sangakkara decided to put the Chargers into bat on a mystery wicket at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack.

With neither team having played at the stadium before Sangakkara felt it would be easier chasing a target later in the night but his decision to bowl first backfired as the Kings XI slumped to a 6 run defeat.

The Kings XI suffered a batting collapse losing big hitters Manvinder Bisla (0), Kumar Sangakkara (0) and Yuvraj Singh (4) inside the first 5 overs to leave the visitors 33-3.

With only Ravi Bopara (38) and Irfan Pathan (60) offering any resistant’s the Kings XI middle order wilted under the pressure as the Kings XI slipped to their third straight defeat.

The defeat for the Kings XI would have been even heavier were it not for Pathan who’s innings of 60 came from just 29 balls. His blitz included 3 fours and five sixes to leave the game in doubt until the last over.

Symonds was in fabulous form smashing 3 fours and 3 sixes on his way to a half century which rescued the Chargers after they lost there way after Gilchrist quick fire 33 at the start of the innings.

Herschelle Gibbs (23) and Symonds enjoyed a 2nd wicket partnership of 54 but the lose of Gibbs in the 10th over sparked a collapse as the Chargers fell from 100-1 to 112-4.

Despite losing his experienced partner, Symonds continued his excellent innings supported by Tirumalasetti Suman enyoing a partnership of 30 before he was caught brilliantly by Bipul Sharma out on the boundary to give Yuvraj Singh his second wicket of the night.

Suman (26) continued where Symonds had left off to help the Chragers reach 170-7.

The Chargers got off to a quick start with Adam Gilchrist enjoying the lightning quick outfield scoring a rapid 33 runs from just 12 balls before he was caught by Mahela Jayawardene.

The Chargers suffered a further blow to their innings in the next over when VS Laxamn was hit on the wrist by Shalabh Srivastava’s wayward run out attempt. After receiving some treatment from the physio Laxman retired hurt.
