Lumb steer Royals to comprehensive victory

Micahel Lumb scored a brilliant 83 to help the Rajasthan Royals cruise to a comprehensive 9 wicket victory over a hapless Kings XI Punjab to keep their hope of a place in the knock out stages alive.

Faced with a target of just 154 the Royals made light work of their run chase helped by some terrible fielding and bowler by the Kings XI.

With their hopes of reaching the IPL semi finals on a knife edge the Kings XI produced a fielding display which would cause a Saturday afternoon village side deep embarrassment.

Sreesanth was the main culprit with 2 wides and 2 no balls in one over but his fielders were just as bad missing catches, run outs and displaying a level of fielding unaccepted at this level of cricket.

The main beneficiary was Lumb who smashed a quick fire 83 from just 43 balls to steer the Royals to a well deserved victory despite being caught by Piyush Chawla in the 9th over.

With the hard work done by Lumb at the top of the order Yusuf Pathan (20) and Naman Ojha (44) saw the Royals to victory with 30 balls to spare.

Having won the toss the Kings XI got off to a slow start losing opener Manvinder Bisla (20) in the third over after he was caught by Faiz Fazel to give Shane Watson the early break through.

Mahela Jayawardene, who scored a wonderful century against the Kolkata Knight Riders on Sunday responded to the loss of Bisla by hitting Aditya Dole for a boundary and a huge six in the next over.

Kings XI skipper Kumar Sangakkara suffered another disappointing innings scoring only 9 runs before he was caught by Yusuf Pathan to leave the visitors 52-2.

Jayawardene was joined at the crease by Yuvraj Singh and the experienced pair built an important partnership of 56 runs which put them in a commanding position with 8 wickets in hand.

After a couple of chances were dropped the Royals finally struck as Yuvraj Singh (28) was bowled by Dole before the impressive bowler picked up the wicket of Jayawardene (44) 2 balls later to leave the Kings XI 109-4.

After such a great partnership the hard work was undone as Ravi Bopara (8) soon followed after being run out leaving Irfan Pathan and Piyush Chawla to steer the Kings XI past 150.
