Surman and Symonds steer Chargers to victory

The Deccan Chargers hopes of reaching the knock out stages of this years IPL tournament were boosted after the defending champs beat the Royal Challengers Bangalore by 7 wickets.

The Chargers victory leaves them 4 points off the 4th and final semi final spot but they still need to win their last four games and hope other teams drop points to stand any chance of keeping their title defence alive.

Having won the toss the Deccan Chargers allowed the Royals Challengers to reach 184-6 with Jacques Kallis and Virat Kohil staring with the bat as the pair both scored superb half centuries.

Faced with such a big target the Chargers got off to a slow start before losing Monish Mishra (9) from the first ball of the third over thanks to a brilliant diving catch by stand in wicket keep Robin Uthappa to give Anil Kumble the early breakthrough.

Gilchrist was joined at the crease by Tirumalasetti Suman and the pait built a second wicket partnership of 77 before the Chargers skipper was stumped by Uthappa to leave the defending champs 88-2.

Rohit Sharma (6) soon followed but Tirumalasetti Surman (78) and Andrew Symonds (53) built a spirited fourth wicket partnership of 91 which steered the Charges to an unlikely victory to keep their hopes alive.

Having been put into bat by the Charges Jacques Kallis scored his tenth IPL half century to help the Royal Challengers recover after losing 3 wickets in the space of 10 balls to set the Chargers a target of 185 to chase for victory.

After enduring a couple of disappointing innings during the Royal Challengers last three games the IPLís leading run scored rediscovered his early tournament form to torment the Chargers bowlers.

Kallisís half century was the backbone of the Royal Challengers innings as the South African once again came to rescue after the home side suffered a middle order stutter.

With opening partner Manish Pandey (1) lasting only three overs Kallis built a 42 run partnership with Rahul Dravid before the Chargers struck to remove Dravid (26), Robin Uthappa (2) and Ross Taylor (1) in the space of 10 balls.

Kallis continued his innings supported now by youngster Virat Kohil as the pair built an important fifth wicket partnership to help the Royal Challengers recover from the loss of three quick wickets.

The partnership had reached 50 when Kohil launched a brutal attack in the 16th over smashing Andrew Symonds for two boundaries and two huge sixes as the Australian conceded 23 runs.

Kohli reached his half century from just 31 balls before Kallisís (68) innings was brought to an end by Mitchell Marsh after he was caught by Ryan Harris out on the boundary to end the pairs 95 run partnership.

Cameron White ended the game with a cameo innings of (13) which included sixes off the last two balls of the innings after Kohli (58) was caught by Symonds in the last over.
