Klinger sets high target

Victorian opening batsman Michael Klinger believes a total in between 160 and 200 will prove hard to beat in the upcoming Twenty20 matches.

Victorian opening batsman Michael Klinger believes a total in between 160 and 200 will prove hard to beat in the upcoming Twenty20 matches.

The Bushrangers travel to Perth to tackle Western Australia on Friday night and then host South Australia at Junction Oval on Sunday afternoon, with the final to be played on January 21.

While most of the Bushrangers team have played Twenty20 at grade level and some even at county level in England, this season is the first time an official competition has been tried at domestic level in Australia.

"It's great game and everyone enjoys it. Now there's a proper competition for us we'll probably take it a little bit more seriously and everyone will enjoy the day," Klinger said on Wednesday afternoon.

When asked what total would be hard to chase, Klinger nominated a figure in between 160 to 200, and said not losing early wickets would be the key to posting a good total.

"That's scoring at eight-plus an over. If we get something near that we'll be pretty happy," he said.

"I think if you lose early wickets you can get yourself into a bit of trouble. If you go hard and it comes off then you're in a pretty good position. Just a matter of a balancing act I suppose."

But Klinger, who has posted two centuries from six ING Cup games this season, agreed the tempo of Twenty20 cricket would be a lot faster than the 50-over version of the game.

"(It's) different to one-day ricket where you have 50 overs to bat, so you've probably got to go a little harder," he said.

On a lighter note, the competition will see players' nicknames appear on the back of their tops, and according to the opener, wicketkeeper Adam Crosthwaite had received several jibes from his teammates about being called "Skinny".

"A few of the guys got a few interesting ones," Klinger mused.

"Adam Crosthwaite is not too happy with his name , but that's just the way it goes so he'll have to live with it
