Tasmania set 137 for victory in Twenty20

A crowd-pleasing half century by Queensland captain Jimmy Maher has allowed the Bulls to set Tasmania a victory total of 137 in the Twenty20 match at the Gabba.

A crowd-pleasing half century by Queensland captain Jimmy Maher has allowed the Bulls to set Tasmania a victory total of 137 in the Twenty20 match at the Gabba.

Maher blasted 59 off 51 balls to steer Queensland to 7-136 from its 20 overs after Tigers skipper Michael Di Venuto won the toss and elected to bowl.

He combined with rookie batsman Steve Paulsen for a 79-run fifth-wicket partnership after Tasmanian quick Ben Hilfenhaus had earlier restricted the Bulls' top-order.

Maher was eventually sent on his way by a terrific diving catch on the boundary by Travis Birt while Paulsen, who smashed the only six of the innings, hit 45 off 46 balls.

Maher delighted the crowd during the opening over with two scintillating boundaries before Hilfenhaus triggered a dramatic collapse.

Hilfenhaus had opener James Hopes (1) caught behind the next over and added the scalps of Nathan Reardon and Chris Simpson soon after.

Reardon, run out at the non-striker's end chasing a quick single, and Simpson were both dismissed for golden ducks as the Bulls looked to increase the run-rate.

Hilfenhaus took 3-17 off his four overs while Adam Polkinghorne picked up 2-27 from 10 overs after Paulsen skied the innings' final delivery to Xavier Doherty at mid-off.
