Australia on top despite Umar Akmal cameo

20 year old Umar Akmal smashed an impressive 21 ball half century to rescue Pakistan after they had been reduced to 47-4 by Australia at a boisterous Edgbaston.

The youngster, who hit a half century against Australia in the Twenty20 World Cup semi finals in the Caribbean was in destructive form once again smashing the fastest ever Twenty20 international 50 by a Pakistan player to help his side reach 167-8.

It was Akmalís 4th half century in international Twenty20 cricket and it came at the perfect time to rescue Pakistan who were in deep trouble.

Having won the toss Pakistan bated first but they got off to a poor start losing opener Shahzaib Hasan (0) from just the 4th delivery of the inning after he was dismissed by Dirk Nannes.

With Hasan back in the dugout Salman Butt (13) and Kamran Akmal (23) enjoyed a second wicket partnership of 43 but their hard work was undone by a batting collapse after Akmal was run out by David Hussey.

Butt followed after the next delivery before Pakistan skipper Shahid Afridi (0) was trapped LBW by Steve Smith 5 balls later to leave the home side 47-4.

With Pakistan in deep trouble Akmalís innings of 64 changed the course of the game and with support from Shoaib Malik (21) Pakistan will be confident of defending a total of 168.
