Disappointing Guyana suffer batting slump

Guyana suffered a nightmare time with the bat after being bowled out for just 103 by the Royal Challengers Bangalore to leave their hopes of causing an upset in tatters.

The Caribbean Twenty20 Champions lost wickets at regular intervals which denied them the chance of building any meaningful partnerships against a world class Royal Challengers bowling attack.

Guyana would have feared the worst having been put into bat by the Royal Challengers but Travis Dowlin and Sewnarine Chattergoon played confidently against the new ball attack of Praveen Kumar and Dale Steyn.

Although scoring slowly the pair built an opening stand of 17 which included a lovely cover drive by Dowlin during Steyn’s second over which brought a cheer from the large crowd inside Centurion.

Despite the boundary Dowlin’s (10) innings was ended 4 deliveries later when he was caught by Steyn at short fine leg after he was hit on the glove by Kumar to end his eventful innings.

Chattergoon responded to the lose of Dowlin by dispatching Kumar for consecutive boundaries to help Guyana reach 27-1 after 5 overs although they should have been two down after Rahul Dravid dropped a dolly from new batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan.

Sarwan made the most of this missed opportunity smashing Jacques Kallis for a huge six over long-off at the start of the next over. The veteran South African international responded brilliantly removing Sarwan’s (7) off stump with the next delivery.

Chattergoon (18) quickly followed his skipper back to the dugout after he was run out by Cameron White he hit the stumps with an excellent throw in the covers to leave Guyana 42-3 after 7.1 overs.

After a positive start the pressure was now starting to mount for the West Indies but Narsingh Deonarine and Christopher Barnwell responded with a 4th wicket partnership of 17 before Deonarine was dismissed by Anil Kumble.

With the recognised batsmen back in the dugout Royston Crandon (5), Jonathan Foo (1) and Derwin Christian (0) quickly followed to leave Guyana 75-7.

Despite the lose of three quick wickets Barnwell remained at the crease to steer the tail towards three figures thanks to a vital innings of 30.
