Disappointing Wayamba crushed by Super Kings
The Chennai Super Kings strolled to an emphatic 97 run victory over the Wayamba Elevens in a totally one sided encounter at Centurion as the current IPL champions made it two wins out of two.
The victory was set up by Murali Vijay and Suresh Raina who shared a 2nd wicket partnership of 137 which helped the Super Kings set Wayamba a victory target of 201.
The pair both recorded impressive half centuries against a lack lustre Wayamba bowling attack to strengthen their chances of reaching the knock out stages of the Twenty20 Champions League.
Faced with a mammoth run chase the Wayamba innings got off to a disastrous start when they lost Jeevantha Kulatunga (0) from just the second delivery of their reply after he was dismissed by Albie Morkel.
Mahela Jayawardene and Jehan Mubarak raised the hopes of a competitive match by scoring 13 runs from the remainder of Morkel’s first over but any hopes were quickly extinguished when Mubarak (7) was caught by MS Dhoni at the start of the third over.
Jayawardene (10) quickly followed as Wayamba’s top order collapse losing 4 wickets in the space of 18 balls as they slumped to 35-6 with Morkel, Doug Bollinger and Ravichandran Ashwin all picking up wickets.
Kushal Janith Perera (7), Kaushal Lokuarachchi (6), Thisara Perera (4) all perished cheaply before Shalika Karunanayake and Isuru Udana offered some resistant’s with a 7th wicket partnership of 27.
The defending IPL champions struck back though with Lakshmipathy Balaji picking up his first wicket of the evening after Udana (13) was caught by Dhoni to reduce Wayamba to 62-7.
Rangana Herath (4) soon followed after he became Ashwin’s third victim of the night before the off spinner became the first bowler in this year’s tournament to pick up 4 wickets in an innings after Ajantha Mendis was caught by Dhoni in the 16th over.
The victory was quickly achieved with Karunanayake (25) innings finally coming to an end after he edged a delivery from Muttiah Muralitharan through to Dhoni to leave Wayamba 103 all out with 3 overs to spare.
Having been put into bat by Wayamba skipper Jehan Mubarak; the Chennai Super Kings got off to an excellent start with Vijay and Matthew Hayden sharing an opening partnership of 43.
The ex Australian test match player responded to his golden duck against the Central Stags with a scratchy innings of 10 which lasted 18 deliveries before he was trapped LBW by Ajantha Mendis in the 6th over.
With Hayden struggerling for confidence; Vijay took control smashing 18 runs off the bowling of Chanaka Welegedara who conceded 3 fours, a six and 5 extras during his first over which put the Super Kings on top.
Despite the lose of Hayden the Super Kings continued to progress well with Vijay and new partner Raina increasing the pressure on Wayamba with a second wicket partnership of 137.
The pair turned the strike over with great effect working the ball into the gaps around Centurion picking up runs from every delivery to help the run rate top 10 runs an over.
With the batsmen firmly on top Vijay completed his 4th domestic Twenty20 half century with slog sweep off the bowling of Shalika Karunanayake which raced through the extra cover for a boundary.
Raina meanwhile recorded his 13th half century in the shortest format of the game soon after with a single played out to long on to cap an impressive performance from the 23 year old.
The partnership reached the century mark in the 16th over before Raina unbelievable dispatched Ajantha Mendis for 4 sixes in the next over to put the Super Kings firmly on top.
Raina smashed Mendis over cow corner, midwicket three times in a spell of devastating batting which floored a shell shocked Wayamba who were unable to halt the floor of runs.
With a century in his sights Raina’s glorious innings was ended by Mubarak who picked up an excellent catch inside the circle to end Raina’s (87) innings which had featured 6 fours and 6 sixes lasting just 44 deliveries.
After building a partnership of 137; Vijay amazingly followed from the next delivery to give Welegedara a small consolation after conceding 40 runs from the three overs he bowled.
Welegedara hopes of a hat trick were ended by Albie Morkel who dispatched his next delivery for a boundary to signal a return to normal services for the Super Kings.
The loss of Raina and Vijay didn’t slow the IPL franchise down with Morkel and MS Dhoni quickly building a 4th wicket partnership of 20 which saw the Super Kings reach 200-3.
After suffering at the hands of Raina and Vijay; Wayamba responded well conceding just 14 runs during the final two overs to limit the score which could have been a lot worse if Raina and Vijay were still at the crease.
