Ferguson and Borgas lead Redbacks recovery
Callum Ferguson and Cameron Borgas shared an 88 run partnership to help the South Australia Redbacks recover from losing three early wickets to set Guyana a victory target of 192.
The pair came together in the 6th with the Redbacks 41-3 but there partnership changed the course of the game to leave Guyana facing a tricky run chase to record their first victory in this year’s tournament.
Having won the toss Ramnaresh Sarwan decided to bowl first and his bowlers got off to an encouraging start picking up the wickets of Daniel Harris and Michael Klinger inside the first 5 over.
The pair shared an opening stand of 124 against the Royal Challengers Bangalore on Friday night but their partnership only lasted 8 deliveries at the Wanderers before Daniel Harris (5) edge a delivery from Paul Wintz onto his own stumps.
Klinger (16), the tournaments leading run scoring followed 3 overs later when he tried to cover drive a delivery from Christopher Barnwell but having misread the pace of the ball Klinger ballooned the shot into the air and was caught by Assad Fudadin at midwicket.
Graham Manou responded by dispatching Barnwell for boundaries off his next two deliveries before Wintz struck again in the next over to remove Manou (15) and leave the Redbacks 41-3.
The early loss of the Harris, Klinger and Manou was the first time in the tournament that the Redbacks middle order had been called on to build a big total and having qualified for the semi finals it was a good opportunity for them to get some time out in the middle.
Faced with spin from both ends new batsmen Ferguson and Borgas slowly built an important 4th wicket partnership, with no pace on the ball they found the gaps in the field to pick up easy singles as their partnership grew.
The pair found the boundary just three times during the first half of their partnership but one they had reached 50 Ferguson increased the tempo dispatching Steven Jacobs for 18 runs in the 14th over.
Lennox Cush faired no better in the next over conceding 13 runs but the Redbacks charged was ended by new bowler Fudadin who bowled Bogras (48) with just his third delivery in the next over to break an 88 run partnership which had helped the Redbacks reached 129-4.
Despite the lose Ferguson (55) recorded a well deserved half century during a rapid 35 run partnership with Daniel Christian (23) before Devendra Bishoo struck back to remove the pair in the space of 3 deliveries to leave the Redbacks 170-6 with 8 balls remaining.
After the early lose of their top order the Redbacks recovered thanks to Ferguson and Borgas before Aaron O’Brien (6) and Tom Cooper (13) completed the job to set Guyana victory target of 192.
