Smith powers Proteas to comfortable victory

South Africa cruised to a comprehensive 7 wicket victory over Zimbabwe at the OUTsurance Oval in Bloemfontein thanks to an impressive half century from Graeme Smith.

The former skipper smashed 58 from just 29 balls, including 9 fours and 2 sixes during an opening stand of 90 with Loots Bosman (33) in reply to Zimambes total of 168-4.

Despite losing Smith, Bosman and Peter Ingram (3) in the space of two overs South Africa cruised to victory against a weak looking Zimbabwe bowling attack thanks to a 4th wicket partnership of 71 by JP Duminy (35) and David Miller (36).

Having won the toss Zimbabwe batted first and thanks to half centuries by Chamu Chibhabha and Hamilton Masakadza the visitors reached 168-4 against South Africa.

Masakadza started off slowly at the top of the innings but he played the anchor role with perfection top scoring with 72 which came from 63 balls; the opener was supported by Chibhabha (52) who smashed an impressive 29 ball half century.

The pair came together in the 4th over and built an impressive 2nd wicket partnership of 76 after Brendan Taylor (0) was trapped LBW by Wayne Parnell to help set South Africa a tricky run chase under the lights.

Having seen his partner dismissed by Parnell in the 13th over; Masakadza attacked the South African bowlers smashing 21 runs from 9 balls before he was run out by Peter Ingram.

Eric Chigumbura (10), Charles Coventry (12) and Keith Dabengwa (12) offered excellent support to Chibhabha and Masakadza as an impressive looking Zimbabwe put the pressure on the home side.
