New Zealand cruise to victory over Pakistan

New Zealand secured a comprehensive 39 run victory over Pakistan at Seddon Park in Hamilton to seal a series victory over the visitors with one game to play.

Martin Guptil (44) and James Franklin (40) lead the way smashing 90 runs during a second wicket partnership which helped the Kiwis reach 185-7.

Faced with a tricky runs chase the visitors got off to the perfect start thanks to Mohammad Hafeez who smashed 16 runs from the first 9 deliveries before Pakistan skipper Shahid Afridi dispatched Kyle Mills for a massive six over the cover boundary.

Afridi tried to repeat the shot from the next delivery but he was bowled thanks to a full toss from Mills as Pakistan ended the second over 24-1.

Despite the loss Hafeez and Ahmed Shehzad (15) added another 44 runs during a quick fire second wicket partnership before the pair fell in consecutive balls after Shehzad was dismissed by Ian Butler at the end of the 8th over and Hafeez was run out at the start of the next over four runs short of a well deserved half century.

With the partnership broken the Kiwis increased the pressure as Pakistan suffered a middle order collapsed which saw them lose four wickets in the space of 5 overs to leave them 114-7.

After his man of the match performance during Sunday’s victory for the Kiwis Tim Southee almost picked up a second consecutive hat trick after he dismissed Umar Akmal (26) and Wahab Riaz (18) at the start of the final over as the Kiwis cruised to victory after Pakistan could only reach 146-9.

Having been put into bat by Pakistan; the Kiwis got off to the worst possible start losing Jessie Ryder (0) who was caught by Umar Akmal off the first delivery of the game bowled by Abdul Razzaq.

Despite the lose Guptil and Franklin hit back to put the Kiwis in charge before Ross Taylor (30) and Scott Styris (34) helped lead the home side to a total of 185-7.
