Collingwood set to miss the start of the IPL

England cricketer Paul Collingwood is set to miss the start of next months IPL after England revealed the middle order batsman would require knee surgery after the World Cup.

The 34 year old, who retired from Test match cricket in January has been struggling with a knee injury he picked up during Englandís ODI series against Australia earlier this year.

Collingwood will undergo keyhole surgery once England's World Cup campaign is complete meaning he will miss the start of the Rajasthan Royals IPL campaign.

"Paul felt some discomfort in his left knee during the group stages of the World Cup, and a precautionary scan ahead of England's match against South Africa showed no significant damage," said the ECB's chief medical officer, Dr Nick Peirce.

"However, further assessment suggests a loose piece of cartilage floating in his knee that will require surgical removal," he added.

"We'll be able to establish a definitive rehabilitation timescale following surgery, but we expect Paul to make a full recovery in due course."
