Christian cameo rescues stuttering Chargers

Daniel Christian smashed a quick fire 30 to help the Deccan Chargers recovery from a middle order collapse to leave the Kings XI Punjab with a run chase of 166.

Christian came into bat with the Chargers 129-5 but the big hitting Aussies quickly smashed 2 fours and 2 sixes to help the home side reach 165-8 after Paul Valhaty (29-4) picked up 4 wickets for the Kings XI.

Despite the loss of Sunny Sohal (7) at the end of the 2nd over the Chargers made solid progress thank to a 2nd wicket stand of 75 between Shikhar Dhawan and Kumar Sangakkara.

The pair made light work of the Kings XI bowling attack, progressing at almost 8 runs an over to put the home side in control of the match as they looked to secure back to back victories at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium for the first time in the franchises history.

The course of the game changed however in the space of 6 deliveries as Sangakkara (35) and then Dhawan (46) gave away their wickets with poorly timed sweep shots.

Sangakkara was the first to go when he picked out Ryan McLaren on the deep midwicket boundary to give Piyush Chawla the vital break through in the 12th over.

Dhawan soon followed his skipper back to the dugout after he chased a wide delivery from Valhaty which he sweep straight to Sunny Singh at short fine leg to leave the Chargers 92-3 after 11.5 overs.

With the game evenly balanced Bharat Chipli (14) lasted just 12 deliveries before he picked out Shaun Marsh who took a nice catch running in from the deep midwicket to give the impressive Valhaty his 2nd wicket of the night.

JP Duminy (18), Manprett Gony (0) quickly followed as the Chargers innings lost direction in the closing stages before the intervention of Christian who’s innings of 30 from just 14 balls changed the course of the game.
