Superb Valhaty guides Kings XI to victory

Paul Valhaty's vain of form continued as he smashed another half century and picked up 4 wickets to help the Kings XI Punjab secure a 8 wicket victory over the Deccan Chargers.

Fresh from scoring a century against the Chennai Super Kings, Valhaty was once again dominate with the bat dispatching 8 fours and 5 sixes to set up an easy victory for the Kings XI after he had picked up 4 wickets to help restrict the Chargers to a total of 165-8.

Despite suffering a middle order batting collapse Daniel Christian rescued the home side with a quick fire 30 which included 2 massive sixes to help the Chargers set the Kings XI a run chase of 166.

Faced with a tricky run chase Adam Gilchrist and Valhaty got the innings off to a perfect start with an opening stand of 134 which left the Chargers on the verge of a heavy defeat.

The pair took just 29 deliveries to reach 50 with Valhaty taking the lead role dispatching Ishant Sharma and Manpreet Gony for massive sixes to help the Kings XI take control of the game.

Not to be out done Gilchrist launched his own blitz which saw the veteran Aussie score an impressive half century from just 31 deliveries as the partnership reached 100 in the 10th over.

Having watched his skipper reach 50, Valhaty secured his own milestone by dispatching JP Duminy over long off with a massive six before the opened repeated the shot from the last delivery of the 13th over to further punish Duminy.

With victory in sight Gilchrist‘s (61) marvellous innings was brought to an end after he picked out Dwaraka Ravi Teja on the deep square leg boundary to give Amit Mishra a consolation wicket.

Mishra struck again to end the innings of Valthaty (75) two overs later but Abhishek Nayar (14) and Dinesh Karthik (3) held their nerve to seal the Kings XI 2nd victory in this years tournament.

Despite the loss of Sunny Sohal (7) at the end of the 2nd over the Chargers made solid progress thank to a 2nd wicket stand of 75 between Shikhar Dhawan and Kumar Sangakkara.

The pair made light work of the Kings XI bowling attack, progressing at almost 8 runs an over to put the home side in control of the match as they looked to secure back to back victories at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium for the first time in the franchises history.

The course of the game changed however in the space of 6 deliveries as Sangakkara (35) and then Dhawan (46) gave away their wickets with poorly timed sweep shots.

Sangakkara was the first to go when he picked out Ryan McLaren on the deep midwicket boundary to give Piyush Chawla the vital break through in the 12th over.

Dhawan soon followed his skipper back to the dugout after he chased a wide delivery from Valhaty which he sweep straight to Sunny Singh at short fine leg to leave the Chargers 92-3 after 11.5 overs.

With the game evenly balanced Bharat Chipli (14) lasted just 12 deliveries before he picked out Shaun Marsh who took a nice catch running in from the deep midwicket to give the impressive Valhaty his 2nd wicket of the night.

JP Duminy (18), Manprett Gony (0) quickly followed as the Chargers innings lost direction in the closing stages before the intervention of Christian who’s innings of 30 from just 14 balls changed the course of the game.
