Chargers claim vital easy over DareDevils

The Deccan Chargers stuttering campaign got back on track thanks to a 16 run victory over the Delhi DareDevils who a disappointed once again as they slipped to their 3rd defeat..

Sunny Sohal and Kumar Sangakkara thwarted the Delhi DareDevils with an excellent batting display to help the Deccan Chargers set the home side a run chase of 165 at the Feroz Shah Kotla.

Sohal (62) lead the way with a 35 ball half century which included 7 fours and although Sangakkara fell just one run short of a quick fire half century the pair helped the Chargers reach 168-4.

Irfan Pathan (28-1) and Ashok Dinda (34-1) proved to be the pick of the DareDevils bowlers to help the home side fight their way back into the game after Sohal and Sangakkara gave the visitors a great start.

David Warner lead the run chase with his second half century of the tournament but with no other batsman offering a threat the DareDevils run chase never recovered from the loss of three early wickets.

Virender Sehwag and David Warner got the innings off to a bright start with an opening stands of 28 but the run chase soon went off the rails after the Chargers struck three times in the space 13 deliveries.

Harmeet Singh struck twice to remove Sehwag (12) and Aaron Finch (0) either side of a wicket from Daniel Christian who trapped Naman Ojha (2) LBW in the 5th over to leave the DareDevils 38-3.

The DareDevils responded in style with a 4th wicket partnership of 52 between Warner and Venugopal Rao who blasted the home side back into contention with a vital 40 ball contribution.

Despite the blossoming partnership the DareDevils were still slipping behind the required run rate which had increased to over 10 runs an over.

It was this scoreboard pressure which saw Venugopal Rao (21) caught by Daniel Christian out on the long off boundary after he attempted to dispatch Amit Mishra for a six in the 13th over.

With the DareDevils run chase faltering Warner completed a fortunate half century when he was dropped by Bharat Chilpi before Shikhar Dhawan struck in his first over to remove the Aussie in the 15th over.

Irfan Pathan (5) quickly followed Warner back to the dugout and although the game was all but lost Yogesh Nager (22) and James Hopes (18) gave the fans which remained in the ground something to cheer for with a 7th wicket partnership of 32 which made the final result look less then one sided.

Having won the toss the Chargers decided to bat first and although they lost Shikhar Dhawan (8) at the end of the 2nd over, Sohal and Sangakkara gave the visitors the perfect start with a 2nd wicket partnership of 92.

After a slow start the partnership burst into life in the 8th over when Sangakkara smashed two boundaries and a six off the spin bowling of Shahbaz Nadeem which resulted in the bowler removed from the attack after just one over.

The partnership continued to be of concern to the DareDevils as Sohal Irfan easily dispatched wayward Irfan Pathan for 3 boundaries in the 10th over as the Chargers total passed 100.

The DareDevils finally made a breakthrough in the 12th over thanks to Aaron Finch who took an excellent catch to remove the Chargers skipper after he tried to bring up his half century with a cover drive off the bowling of Dinda.

Nadeem struck again for the home side to remove Sohal two overs later to halt the Chargers progress which left then 129-3 with just over 5 overs remaining in their innings.

Daniel Christian (8) quickly followed but Cameron White, playing in his first game for the Chargers in this year’s tournament added 37 valuable runs during the final few overs to help the Chargers reach 168-4.
