Kings XI halted by Knight Riders spinners
The Kings XI Punjab were restricted to a total of only 119-6 against the Kolkata Knight Riders after their big hitting top order failed to fire at Eden Gardens.
Iqbal Abdulla (19-2) and Yusuf Pathan (24-1) led the way for the home side, who took advantage of the slow wicket to stifle the visitors despite the best efforts of Dinesh Karthik (42) who top scored for the Kings XI.
The Kings XI got off to a good start thanks to Adam Gilchrist and Paul Valthaty who shared an opening stand of 32 before the Knight Riders took control of the game.
In form batsman Paul Valthaty (7) was the first to go; having suffered a frustrating time at the crease the opener picked out Manoj Tiwary at long-on to give Pathan the break through in the 5th over.
A momentís hesitation cost Shaun Marsh (5) his wicket an over later when he failed to respond to Gilchristís call for a quick single until the Kings XI skipper was half way down the crease leaving Iqbal Abdulla with an easy task of removing the bails.
Gilchrist (26) quickly followed when he was bowled by Iqbal Abdulla before the visitors collapse was completed when Abhishek Nayar (0) was run out by Eoin Morgan to leave the Kings XI 53-4 after 9.2 overs.
With the pressure mounting David Hussey and Dinesh Karthik shared a 5th wicket partnership of 33 to lead the visitors recovery until the impressive Iqbal Abdulla struck with his last ball to trap Hussey (15) LBW.
Although Karthik remained at the crease until he was run out in the final over the Knight Riders will feel confident of chasing a below par score despite the slowness of the wicket.
