Impressive Sabres cruise to 9 wicket victory
Roelof van der Merwe smashed an unbeaten half century to help the Somerset Sabres cruised to a comprehensive 9 wicket victory over the Kent Spitfire at the Nevill Ground in Tunbridge Wells.
The South African smashed seven boundaries and six sixes to lead the Sabres to victory to get their Friends Life t20 campaign under way after their 7 wicket defeat against the Hampshire Royals on Wednesday night.
Despite the early loss of Peter Trego (6), van der Merwe (89) shared a 2nd wicket stand of 150 with Marcus Trescothick (69) to help the Sabres claim a simple victory with over 3 overs to spare.
Having won the toss the Spitfires suffered a torrid time with the bat and were rescued by Darren Stevens who smashed 68 runs during a 4th wicket stand of 80 with Robert Key (43) to help the home side reach 163-8.
Lewis Gregory (26-3) led the Sabres bowling attack to pick up the early wickets of Joe Denly (7) and Martin van Jaarsveld to leave the home side in trouble early on.
