Royals prove too strong for the Spitfires
The Hampshire Royals made it three wins out of three to start their Friends Life t20 title defence in style thanks to a 20 run victory over the Kent Spitfires at the Nevill Ground in Tunbridge Wells.
Having watched on for over three hours while heavy rain threatened to wash out the game, Michael Lumb (35) and Jimmy Adams (33) blasted the Royals to victory in a five over slog once play finally got under way.
With only five overs to set the Spitfires a victory target the pair wasted little time as they smashed eight sixes during an opening stand of 67 before Lumb was bowled by Adam Ball in the 4th over.
James Vince added six runs as the Royals reached an imposing total of 71-1 from just 30 deliveries to leave the Spitfires with a mammoth run chase.
The home side got their reply off to a shaky start as they lost Robert Key (7) and Joe Denly (2) in the space of two consecutive deliveries from Simon Jones in the second over to leave the Spitfires 11-2.
Despite the double loss, Darren Stevens (45) kept the home sides faint hopes alive by smashing five boundaries and three sixes during an amazing 16 ball innings but even with his best efforts the Royals held firm to record their third straight victory.
