Riverside fails to escape the clutches of the rain

The Friends Life t20 Northern group clash between the Durham Dynamos and the Derbyshire Falcons has been abandoned at the Riverside Ground in Chester-le-Street.

Having beaten the elements the Falcons were able to complete their innings, reaching 169-5 before the rain, which had slowly moved across the county, reached the ground towards the end of the visitorís innings.

With the rain getting heavier and heavier and with little hope of the Dynamos starting their run chase, umpires Peter Hartley and Richard Kettleborough were left with no other option but to abandon the game just before 17.30.

Having been put into bat by Dynamos skipper Dale Benkenstein, the Falcons recorded an impressive total of 169-5 thanks to Chesney Hughes (48) and Wayne Madsen (54) who shared a 3rd wicket stand of 60.

The pair came together in the 10th over, after Martin Guptill (44) had been dismissed by Liam Plunkett who took a simple catch off his own bowling to remove the opener.

Madsen led the way with a 25 ball half century but it proved to be in vain as the rain, which had caused the other four of todayís Friends Life t20 games to be abandoned arrived at the Riverside Ground.
