Andrew half century stuns Bears at Edgbaston

Gareth Andrew stunned the Warwickshire Bears with a quick fire half century in the dark to seal a dramatic one wicket victory for the Worcestershire Royals in a rain effect game at Edgbaston.

Having been set a victory target of 185, the Royals slumped to just 96-6 after Daryl Mitchell (17) was trapped LBW by Steffan Piolet at the start of the 12th over.

With the pressure mounting, rain falling and light slowly fading away, Andrew (65) came to the crease and smashed four boundaries and four sixes to seal a dramatic victory which was completed in the dark.

Despite Andrew’s heroics the course of the game edged back and forth with both side’s leading the way under the Duckworth Lew method as the conditions progressively got worse and worse until the Royals came out on top in the final over.

With light drizzle falling through out their innings the Bears managed to record a total of 184-6 to leave the Royals facing a tricky run chase in worsening conditions.

William Porterfield (54) led the way, scoring a 33 ball half century to give the Bears a good start despite the loss of Neil Cater (6) and Varun Chopra (19) who were both dismissed by Jack Shantry inside the opening 5 overs.

Darren Maddy (8) and Jim Troughton (5) failed to fire before Porterfield’s innings was brought to an end by Shakib Al Hasan in the 13th over as the Royals tried to fight their way back into the game.

Rikki Clarke (22) quickly followed before Tim Ambrose (44) and Chris Woakes smashed 65 runs from just 35 balls to help the Bears take control of the game as the rain started to fall heavily.
