Azhar and Stevens star in Spitfires victory

The Kent Spitfires strengthened their chances of sealing a place in the Friends Life t20 quarter finals thanks to a vital 15 run victory over the Surrey Lions at the Kia Oval.

Azhar Mahmood was in impressive form, smashing 60 runs from just 40 deliveries to help the Spitfires record a total of 181-9 which helped them leap frog above the Lions and the Essex Eagles into 4th place in the Southern Group.

Jason Roy (53) led the Lions charge; smashing eight boundaries and one six during a 31 ball half century but once he was dismissed by Darren Stevens (2-20) in the 9th over the Lions struggled to stay in the hunt.

With wickets falling at regular intervals the Lions were restricted to a total of just 166 despite a lower order cameo by Stuart Meaker who recorded a t20 career best of 17.

The victory means the Spitfires now go into tomorrow nights game against the Eagles at the County Ground in Chelmsford, knowing a victory will guarantee them a place in the quarter finals.

Despite losing for the first time in five games, the Lions can still qualify as well, if they can see off the Sussex Sharks down at Hove in a must win game for both teams as the group stages of the tournament come to a dramatic end tomorrow night.

Although Azhar Mahmood led the way; Stevens (43) enjoyed a record breaking night for the Spitfires passing Darren Maddy as the all time leading run scorer in the history of domestic t20 cricket in England with a total of 1,960 runs.
