Nicol powers New Zealand to total of 174-7
A half century from Rob Nicol helped New Zealand record a total of 174-7 against Sri Lanka in their opening t20 World Cup Super Eights match at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium.
Nicol smashed three fours and four sixes during his 40 ball innings which saw the opening score 58 runs before he was caught by Lahiru Thirimanne off the bowling of Akila Perera (2-32) in the 16th over.
Perera also took the wicket of fellow opener Martin Guptill (38) in the 8th over after the pair had enjoyed an opening stand of 57 after Ross Taylor won the toss and elected to bat first.
Brendon McCullum (25) and Taylor (23) enjoyed cameo innings to help the Kiwis push home their advantage despite a late wobble which saw them record a total of 175 to leave Sri Lanka with a tricky run chase.
