Gladiators won't let it slip

Alex Gidman insists there will be no slacking from Gloucestershire as they approach their final group game in the Twenty20 Cup.

Victory over Glamorgan in the Cardiff rain last night assured the Gladiators of top spot in the Midland, West and Wales section and a home quarter-final tie later this month.

But vice-captain Gidman and his teammates will be just as eager to complete their qualifying matches in style by beating Northants in Bristol tonight and registering a seventh successive win in the short format.

"We want to keep winning," declared Gidman. "If we beat Northants, we will be able to take that momentum into the quarter-finals and, hopefully beyond.

"Winning is a great feeling and we're not looking to change anything.

"We will go with the same players, go all out to win the game and give our home supporters something to cheer about. They have been fantastic and we don't want to let them down by taking our foot off the pedal now."

Of the five-wicket win over Glamorgan, Gidman said: "It's job done. I'm delighted. We've finished top of the group, booked a home game in the last eight and kept our momentum going."

Gidman kept a cool head under pressure to score a match-winning 52 from 35 balls as Gloucestershire chased down a victory target of 191 with three balls to spare and he admitted: "The end came quite quickly, as it often does in Twenty20.

"I knew it was important to just keep going and then see where we were with a few overs to go. Fortunately, winning becomes a habit and we had the self-belief to see the job through to the end."

Steady rain fell throughout the game and Gidman conceded: "We had to change our gameplan. It was difficult for the spinners and so I had to bowl myself and use other guys in slightly different roles.

"The conditions were quite unbelievable and credit to both teams for making such a good game of it."

Tonight's game begins at 5.30 and tickets are still available on the gate.
