Barbados Outplay Anguilla

Barbados utilized their superior skills and wider experience to outplay a purposeful Anguilla in game eight of the Stanford 20/20 Tournament this evening at the Stanford Cricket Ground.

Favourites Barbados made a modest 141 for 6 from 20 overs but held Anguilla to 103 for 7 from their 20 to win by 38 runs.

Bajan skipper Ian Bradshaw won the toss and opted to bat first but while the crowd was expecting fireworks the youthful Anguillans had other plans. The mainly teenage bowling attack rebounded from an initial flier from left hander Martin Nurse and right hander Dale Richards to keep their total within reach.

Jason Haynes batting at number four led the way with a composed 38 from 28 balls with three fours and one six. At the top of the order, Nurse made a run-a-ball 35 with four fours and one six. The other opener, Richards also made a run-a-ball 21 as Barbados was never allowed to go on the rampage many were forecasting.

Montcin Hodge picked up 2 for 23 while Delon Skellekie bagged 2 for 28 as all the bowlers contributed towards keeping the Bajan batting in check.

Despite a gettable total, with a four prong pace attack of all test players it would always have been monumental for Anguilla to prevail.

Left armer Pedro Collins troubled the batsmen and did the early damage with pace and movement. He eventually ended with 3 for 13 from four overs which gained him a US$25,000 pay day for Man-of-the-Match.

His first wicket, Leon Lake (0), also brought in quite a chunk of change for wicketkeeper Carlo Morris who picked up US$10,000 for Play-of-the-Match for a brilliant diving catch in front of first slip.

Chesney Hughes, a mere 15 year old, top scored with 20 from 16 deliveries with three fours. He received support from another teenager, Skellekie, who made 18 before he was bowled by Collins.

Lyndel Richardson made a patient 17 while Montcin Hodge compiled 15 but their combined efforts, though deserving of commendation, were still inadequate to complete what would have been a shock upset.

Wickets fell every few overs and it slowed and stifled the Anguillans as Bradshaw (1 for 22), Corey Collymore (1 for 21) and Sulieman Benn (1 for 15) dented their batting intermittently.

Barbados now joins Nevis, Grenada and St Vincent and the Grenadines in the quarterfinal of the multi-million dollar tournament.
